Talibah Saifiya blesses us with Middle of the Night, a musical interpretation of the pain one experiences on the heels of love lost. It speaks to the time it takes to accept the narrative and the incessant thoughts that visit in the silent times of darkness. The visuals represent the morning after when memories replay and emotions pour. Emotions we know all too well. The opening scene is how I often feel when alone, overthinking on what transpired and how he may feel. How he doesn’t care. How he’s holding someone else, and how that will never be me again. I have a habit of replaying the “what-ifs” in my head— attempting to make sense of what happened and what could have been done differently. I may even blame myself for an outcome totally outside of my control.
“It aint ever gon be the same”
Have you ever said this and still tried to give the relationship a second, third, or fourth try? The way Talibah Safiya backs away from the man lying peacefully in bed released feelings of disgust and resentment. It’s when you’re faced with a harsh reality that a romance can and will not progress because of your inability to forgive, or you’ve finally grasped the concept of completely “Letting Go” — for your own sanity.
A consistent story amongst adult romantics is the overlapping of lovers. Often times love lingers and we bring the energy of former companions into the narrative of our newly developing romance. in this visual, Songstress, Talibah Safiya, and Video Director ,Adisa Duke, beautifully captures true love in all of its messiness, pain, and eventual dissolve.
