Jesus Is King

Rating: **

To say I was underwhelmed would be an understatement. Jesus Is King is not bad, but from an MC of Kanye’s caliber, it was not good. Lyrics were sub-par and they’ve been for a while now. Do I respect Kanye using his music as therapy and choosing to share his journey to find God, peace, and understanding? Sure. Kanye is an influential artist, so if him telling his story helps someone else seek truth in a higher power, then I support it. One track I did enjoy was Everything We Need — mainly because this is something I have to tell myself day in and day out when I feel I am not where I should be. We all have those days, but it’s okay to check yourself and realize you are exactly where you need to be. His features were solid and honestly carried the album. I believe many expected an album full of southern baptist gospel samples featuring the Sunday Service Choir, but luckily this isn’t that. I will say Jesus Is King lacked soul — the type of soul that can make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up when you listen to songs that give a testimony or speak truth. I listened to this project from front to back and did not get that feeling one time. No Chills. Nothing. There were more songs I could genuinely FEEL on album KIDS SEE GHOSTS, a 7-track Kanye and Kid Cudi collaboration released last year. Dr. Dre announced a Jesus Is King II is coming soon, so let’s hope it sonically delivers.
